Do you need a heavy duty or standard duty roof rack?

What are you planning to carry? A couple of surfboards on weekends is very different from a fully loaded rooftop tent or a stack of tradesman's ladders. Load, frequency, vehicle roof type and driving conditions all decide which rack is right. We can find the right roof rack for your vehicle and how you use it.

We stock roof racks for popular makes and models, and can source fitments for less common vehicles within a couple of days.

Heavy Duty Roof Racks

Class 4rated to a vehicle’s maximum towing capacity.

Built for maximum load and rugged use -think 4WDs with rooftop tents, awnings and recovery gear, or tradieutes carrying long, heavy materials. Heavy duty bars and platforms from Rhino-Rack and Yakima are made from reinforced steel or heavy-gauge alloy and are rated for dynamic loads well above standard crossbars. If you're building out a serious touring or work setup, this is the category to start in

Aero / Standard Duty Roof Racks

Class 3rated up to 1600kg.

The everyday choice for most drivers -SUVs, wagons and family cars carrying bikes, kayaks, roof boxes and camping gear. Aero bars (like the Rhino-Rack Vortex or Yakima StreamLine) are shaped to cut wind noise and drag, keeping fuel use and cabin noise down while still offering strong dynamic load ratings for typical weekend gear.

Light Duty / Sports Roof Racks

Class 2rated up to 1200kg.

Best for occasional users carrying lighter loads -a set of skis, a single kayak or a couple of bikes a few times a year. Lighter bars and easy-fit systems from Yakima and Thule work well here, especially if you'd prefer to remove the bars between trips to keep the vehicle looking clean and cutting drag.

Euro-Style Roof Racks

Sleek, low-profile bars designed to sit close to the roof for a factory-integrated look. Popular on European SUVs and wagons where aesthetics matter as much as function. Rhino-Rack's Euro range and Whispbar's flush bars fit this brief and are still rated to handle typical roof loads.

Ladder Racks & Tradesman Roof Racks

Purpose-built for trades -heavy-gauge steel bars, ladder rollers, load stops, and extended platforms designed to carry ladders, pipe, timber and long materials safely. If you use your ute or van for work every day, a tradesman-specific system is far safer and more durable than adapting a general-purpose rack.

Roof Platforms & Cargo Baskets

A full flat platform (Pioneer, Backbone, HD) turns your roof into a modular surface for rooftop tents, awnings, jerry can holders, recovery boards, spare wheels and more. Ideal for 4WD touring builds where you want one strong base for a whole ecosystem of accessories.

Where do I find my vehicle's roof load capacity?

Every vehicle has a maximum roof load rating set by the manufacturer. It's in your owner's manual or on the manufacturer's website - make sure you check for the exact model and year.

There are two numbers you need to understand:
• Dynamic load -the maximum weight the roof can carry while the vehicle is moving. This is the figure that matters for everyday use.
• Static load -the maximum weight the roof can carry when the vehicle is stationary. This is important if you're using a rooftop tent, because two adults sleeping on the roof can easily exceed the dynamic rating (but the vehicle isn't moving, so the higher static rating applies).

The rack itself also has a load rating, which may be lower than the vehicle's roof rating. The lower of the two figures is your safe working limit -plus the weight of the rack itself counts toward the total

Roof Rack Noise, Fuel Use & Aerodynamics

Roof racks add drag. Even a well-designed aero bar will nudge your fuel consumption up slightly, and a poorly chosen or badly loaded rack can add noticeable wind noise. Choosing the right bar profile for your vehicle -and removing bars when they're not in use, if the system allows -keeps this to a minimum. Our team can walk you
through the trade-offs between low-profile flush bars, aero bars and heavy duty square bars.

TYPES OF ROOF RACKS

  • FLUSH BAR

  • THROUGH BAR

  • RAIL BAR

  • HEAVY DUTY BARS

Roof rack accessories.

A set of crossbars is just the start. The accessories you add turn a basic rack into a system built for exactly what you carry.

Roof Boxes & Cargo Pods

Class 4Roof Boxes & Cargo Pods

Weatherproof, lockable storage for luggage, camping gear and anything you'd rather not leave exposed on the roof. Available in a range of sizes to suit small hatchbacks through to large 4WDs. Great for family road trips where boot space is at a premium.

Kayak, SUP & Canoe Carriers

Class 3Kayak, SUP & Canoe Carriers

J-cradles, saddles and stackers designed to hold watercraft securely at highway speed. Bars N Racks can match the right carrier to your boat and vehicle -including load-assist designs that make lifting a single kayak much easier.

Bike Carriers (Roof-Mount)

Class 2Bike Carriers (Roof-Mount)

Fork-mount, wheel-on and downtube-clamp roof bike carriers from Yakima, Thule and Rhino-Rack. Roof-mount is the go-to choice when your towbar is already in use or when you want to keep the rear of the vehicle
clear.

Ski & Snowboard Carriers

Padded clamp-style carriers for winter trips to the Snowy Mountains. Fit multiple pairs of skis or boards while protecting the edges and finish.

Roof Platforms & Cargo Baskets

Modular platforms -Rhino-Rack Pioneer, Backbone, Yakima LockN'Load -turn your roof into a mounting surface for everything from recovery tracks to jerry can holders, spare wheels and rooftop tents.

Awnings & Rooftop Tents

Pull-out awnings and rooftop tents that mount straight onto compatible platforms. Ideal for 4WD touring, campsites and shaded work sites. We fit and can advise on load ratings, orientation and compatibility

Ladder Racks, Rollers & Load Stops

• Ladder rollers make loading and unloading long ladders single-handed and safe.
• Load stops stop long items sliding forward or back at braking and acceleration.
• Nylon load holders and ratchet straps keep loads locked down without damaging the finish.

Tie-Downs, Straps & Ratchets

Rated tie-down straps, ratchet grabs and load-securing hardware. Using the correct rating is a legal requirement,
not just a good idea -under-rated straps are a common cause of load-shift incidents.

Locks & Security

Locking bar-to-vehicle fittings, lockable carrier accessories and matched-key systems so a single key covers your bars, box, bike carrier and ski holder.
Whether you're setting up for touring, weekend sport, or every-day work -Bars N Racks can put together a roof system that carries exactly what you need, safely and quietly, so you arrive at your destination with everything intact and no hassles to spoil the trip.

ROOF RACKS FAQ'S

We stock a full range of roof racks -aero bars, heavy duty bars, flush bars, through bars, Euro-style bars, roof platforms and tradesman ladder racks -from leading brands including Rhino-Rack, Yakima, Thule, Rola, Whispbar and Prorack. Whichever way you use your vehicle, we can match a system to it

Yes, we fit roof racks to virtually every make and model on Australian roads -from small hatchbacks and sedans through to SUVs, wagons, utes, vans, 4WDs, EVs and hybrids. Contact us to confirm the exact fitment for your vehicle.

Absolutely. Our team will walk you through your vehicle's roof type, what you plan to carry, how often you'll use the rack and whether you want it low-profile or heavy duty -and recommend the right bars and load rating based on that.

Yes. We supply and fit roof boxes, kayak and SUP carriers, bike carriers, ski holders, awnings, rooftop tents, ladder rollers, load stops, tie-downs and locks -everything you need to build out a complete system.

Load capacity depends on both the rack and your vehicle. Every vehicle has a manufacturer-set roof load limit (dynamic while driving, and often a higher static limit while parked). The safe working limit is whichever is lower -the rack rating or the vehicle rating -minus the weight of the rack itself. We'll calculate this with you before you buy.

Dynamic load is the maximum weight your roof can carry while the vehicle is moving -this is the number that matters for luggage, kayaks, boxes and everyday gear. Static load is the higher weight the roof can carry when the vehicle is parked, which matters when using a rooftop tent with people sleeping on the roof.

Any roof-mounted gear adds some drag and can add noise. A well-chosen aero bar will keep both to a minimum, and removing the bars when they're not in use (on systems that allow it) restores fuel economy. We'll steer you toward the right profile for your vehicle.

Yes. We have dedicated experience fitting roof racks and accessories to electric and hybrid vehicles, including Tesla, Polestar, BYD, Toyota hybrid and others. We'll ensure the fitment is safe, doesn't interfere with panels or antennas, and stays within roof load limits.

Absolutely -this is one of our strongest areas. We supply and fit full 4WD roof platforms, rooftop tents, awnings, jerry can holders, recovery track mounts and heavy duty bars from Rhino-Rack, Yakima and Ironman 4x4 for touring and remote travel.

Yes. We build tradesman-specific setups -ladder racks with rollers, load stops, van racks and full fleet fit-outs. If you use your vehicle for work, we'll design a rack that carries your gear safely and stands up to daily use.

Standard crossbar fitments are usually completed within an hour or two, and most jobs can be done same day. Full platform builds, tradesman fit-outs or complex rooftop tent installs take longer -we'll give you a clear time when you book.

Yes, every rack we sell is covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Duration and terms vary by brand and product -we'll walk you through what's covered before you buy.

Regular maintenance is straightforward: check the fittings are tight after long trips or heavy loads, rinse off salt and road grime especially after coastal or off-road driving, and inspect the straps, clamps and rubber pads for wear. We're happy to walk you through what to check on your specific system.

Sometimes. The bars themselves may be reusable, but the fitting kit (feet, clamps, pads) is usually vehicle-specific. If you're changing vehicles, bring your existing rack in and we'll tell you what carries over and what needs to be replaced.

Yes -all the roof racks and accessories we supply meet or exceed Australian standards for safety, load rating and compliance.

Yes. Come back to the Brookvale workshop any time for a fitment check, adjustment, replacement parts or advice on adding accessories. We back what we fit.

We accept all major payment methods, including Afterpay for eligible purchases up to $1,500.

Book by phone, email, or through the quote form on this page. We'll confirm timing, vehicle fitment and pricing before you come in.
